INSTALLATION PROCEDURE FOR SELF INSTALLATION

IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE A SAFE AND SECURE INSTALLATION, THE TUFFRAX™ OVERHEAD STORAGE SYSTEMS MUST BE INSTALLED INTO CEILING SOLID WOOD STRUCTURE SUCH AS JOISTS, RAFTERS, TRUSSES, ETC., THAT CAN HAVE AN ADDITIONAL LOAD OF AT LEAST 600 POUNDS.

IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ:

All TUFFRAX™ overhead storage systems have a weight capacity of 600 lbs. The load must be distributed evenly throughout the wire deck area and the supplied 3" lag bolts must be properly screwed into solid wood (joist, rafter, trusses etc...). Spectrum Innovations, Inc. does not make any claims to the structure in which you will be installing the TUFFRAX™ overhead systems, nor do we make any claims on the structure's strength, load capacity or it's ability to hold an additional 600 pounds of load capacity. It is your responsibility to investigate and/or determine the structure's load integrity and not overload the ceiling's support structure. Spectrum Innovations, Inc. cannot and will not be held liable for failures, liabilities and/or problems that may arise from installation and/or structure failures.

Tools Required:

  • Eye Protector
  • 8 FT. ladder
  • Rubber Mallet
  • Cordless Drill
  • 3/16 Drill bit
  • 7/16 Drill nut driver
  • 7/16 Open End wrench
  • Stud Finder (deep scan/ electronic)
  • Drywall Caulking
  • Measuring Tape
  • Pencil

Note: for all sizes, use the following instructions

1) Unpack all boxes and carefully lay all parts on floor.

2) Match all parts to the "Parts List" provided with the frame box.

3) Before beginning the installation, decide on the location where the unit(s) will be installed in your garage. Determine where it will work best for you, and draw a diagram to help you visualize the unit installed.

4) In order not to decrease your unit's load capacity of 600 lbs., do not install two 6'x2', 6'x3',6'x4', 8'x2', 8'x3' or 8'x4 units on the same ceiling beams, joist, trusses, etc. If you install (the maximum allowed) two units on the same ceiling support structure, each TUFFRAX™ unit's load capacity will be decreased to 275 lbs each.

5) If installing above the garage door, open the garage door, measure the distance between the highest point of the garage door center and the ceiling to determine if there is adequate room for the unit. You will need at least 20" of height space.

6) With a Joist/Stud finder, locate the ceiling joists (ceiling support structure) in the area you desire to install the unit and determine the direction in which the joists are running. Identifying your joist configuration is very important for it will determine the direction of the rack system's layout.

7) Hold the 4½ inch ceiling brackets to the ceiling and mark the center of the two outer holes for the 3" lag bolts with a pencil. See

8) Drill 3/16" pilot holes in the center of each outer slots, for the 3" lag bolts

9) Screw the ¼" x 3" lag bolts into the outer bracket holes into the ceiling support beam. Be sure to use a washer on each bolt between the bolt head and the ceiling mount bracket. Measure from the center bracket hole the distance to the next bracket center hole (depending on model size) and repeat step 9. The 3" lag bolts must be installed with at least 2" embedment into solid wood (joists).

10) Identify the height from the ceiling where you would like the bottom of the shelf to be. Keep in mind your usable storage space will be 2 ½ "shorter than this dimension due to the bottom frame beam.

11) Screw a top and a bottom angle posts together to form one upright, with the top angle post on the outside. Slide the posts together until you get the desired height. The posts are adjustable in 1½" increment. Bolt 2 angle posts together using the (2) ¼" x ¾" bolts, washers and nuts on each side of the angle post. Use 2 washers, one between the bolt head and angle post and one between the nut and angle post. Place one bolt on each side of the upright angle (make sure the screw and nuts are very tight)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. HOW MANY TUFFRAX™ UNITS CAN I INSTALL IN MY GARAGE?
A. It will depend on the configuration of the ceiling joists, trusses, rafters and wood beam structures. In order to sufficiently distribute the storage load, you should not install more than two TUFFRAX™ units on any two ceiling beams (rafters, studs, roof trusses, etc.). With the right ceiling configuration, a 2 car garage can have up to six 8'x4' units.

Q. WHAT IS THE MINIMUM HEIGHT REQUIREMENT FOR INSTALLATION?
A. Regardless of the size you choose, all TUFFRAX™ units require a minimum height of 20-22 inches in the area where they are to be installed, including above the garage door(s). However, our installers can custom cut the racks to fit. You should inform us at the time you book your appointment if you will require this additional service.

Q. CAN I INSTALL THE UNITS MYSELF?
A. The TUFFRAX™ units come with easy to follow instructions and require minimal tools. The instructions are prepared for homeowners who are familiar with accepted construction practices for installing shelves, cabinets and storage racks.

Q. HOW DO I LOCATE MY CEILING STUDS?
A. The easiest method is to use an electronic stud sensor and follow the directions provided. If an electronic sensor is not available, you can identify visible nailing or drywall patterns to see the direction of the studs. If none are visible drive a small nail 1 ½ inch nail into the ceiling to locate a stud. Once you locate the stud move the nail approximately ¼ inch to the right and drive in 1 ½ inches, repeat this step until you locate the right edge of the stud and then again to locate edge of the left side.

Q. CAN I HAVE MY UNITS INSTALLED PROFESSIONALLY?
A. Yes. We have professional installers and/or subcontractors available to complete the entire installation.

Q. CAN UNITS BE INSTALLED INTO THE NEW METAL FRAMED HOMES?
A. No. NEVER install any of the units to metal supports. They MUST be installed to solid wood structures.
